Be

Becky Hemsley 另外一首非常美麗的詩 The Letter Be。它讓我想到 Lupita Nyong'o，在贏得奧斯卡獎後接受過的一個訪談，她談了身為一位黑人女人對於自己的外表，對於社會覺得白就是美的觀念。在訪問裡她說過的一句話讓我印象特別深刻：「my mother again would say to me, ‘You can’t eat beauty. It doesn’t feed you.’ And these words plagued and bothered me; I didn’t really understand them until finally I realised that beauty was not a thing that I could acquire or consume, it was something that I just had to be.”」

這句 something that I just had to be 當時給我很大的震撼。“Be” 這個英文單字在中文常常被翻譯成"成為/變成“，“be rich” 會被翻譯成“變成富有/成為富有”。但在英文裡，它另一個定義是：Exist，即是一種現有的狀態，或一種存有。當Lupita 說：Beauty was something that I just had to be，我們可以詮釋為：美麗本來就是她與生俱來的現有狀態，她不需要做任何事情，美麗甚至不是她的特質或她的氣質，她就是美，她的存在本身就是美。我常常覺得“美麗”不是屬於我的形容詞，我聰明能幹，學習能力超強，但我不美麗，這是我一直以來根生蒂固的想法。Lupita Nyong'o 這句話告訴我，我的存在就是美。美不要需要任何動作或附加品：化妝，髮型，美麗的衣裳，說人人愛聽的話，出得廚房入得廳堂，溫柔賢慧，都不是這些。

我在這宇宙間的存有就是美。

當我們用這 be 的定義來讀 Becky Hemsley 的這首詩，它突然變得非常強大，充滿了 empowerment。自信，美麗，堅強，快樂，無懼都是小女孩們與生俱來的，我們不應該也沒有權利抹煞掉。

我在寫這篇時剛好英格蘭女子足球隊贏得了歐盟杯。這是英格蘭女子足球隊第一次贏得這個獎，舉國歡騰。BBC Sport 一位主持人激動的說：「你們知道嗎？才幾年前，英國沒有一個足球場要承辦女子足球比賽。因為他們都覺得沒有商業上的利益。大家看看現場，女子足球的火車已經勇往直前，你不上車，是你的損失。」

但我們在社交媒體看見什麼，一班男網民冷諷熱嘲笑：

“women soccer is not soccer”

“they are unprofessional"

"women soccer is so boring"

"Womans footbal will never hit a quarter of the heights of the men's game, acting like a group of 12 years old mentality"

"I watched the first couple of matches, it was so bad I didn't watch any more"

"Womens football will never be important mate. It will only be good with smaller goals, smaller pitch and no offside rule"

但英格蘭有千千萬萬位小女孩，在現場，在電視前樂開懷。英格蘭捧杯代表她們成為職業足球員的夢想是能夠實現的。連英女王也第一時間祝賀 : “...your success goes far beyond the trophy you have so deservedly earned. You have all set an example that will be an inspiration for girls and women today, and for future generations. It is my hope that you will be as proud of the impact you have had on your sport as you are of the result today." 

再說一次：自信，美麗，堅強，快樂，無懼都是女孩們與生俱來的。
